Evangelism and University Lunch

We continue doing evangelism in our contact center "El Camino" and one way we do this is through free university lunches. Once a month we invite university students and people in general to come into El Camino for a free lunch.

We prepare 25 plates, which have rice, French fries and a piece of fried chicken and serve it with a glass of juice that we prepared. Normally we ask Elvira, our sister from the church, to prepare the dishes, in order to buy from her because she does not have a stable job.

At the August lunch I gave the talk on true love. In order for them to know God through His word and also to use El Camino we invite them to return whenever they wish and we also invite them to the Sunday worship service.

We use lunches as a hook to evangelize because it is a good way to get the attention of university students. For them it is a great blessing to receive free food. Many of the university students come from other cities in the country, and the financial help that their parents give them is basic. They have very limited funds and they are grateful for a free lunch and a message from God that we give them. For us it is very good moment to talk to them about God.

Some of them return to El Camino with confidence to drink coffee or tea, chat, and we take the opportunity to continue talking to them about God.

In the evening his disciples came to him and said: This is a secluded place and it is getting late. Send the people away, so they can go to the towns and buy themselves something to eat. “You don't have to go,” Jesus answered. Feed them yourselves. (Matt. 14:15,16)

We cannot always evangelize or meet people as we think, or as we want. On Friday mornings I go with Ricardo, a friend from another church, to his land in order to share with him, talk about the things of God and as a way to do a little physical work on the land. We remove the weeds, preparing the land to plant corn and beans in season when the rain arrives in December or January with the blessing from above.

Personally, it helps me to do a little work with the land. It gives me peace, it encourages me, it makes me remember my childhood, my youth when I lived with my grandparents in the country.

One way to meet people is to go out and walk the streets, not just wait in a place for people to arrive looking for God. I met Julio on the street through Ricardo, we were waiting for the bus and Julio was waiting to meet someone who could give him a job. He is a plumber and does any construction work. A lot of people who have this profession wait at certain intersections and people will come and offer them a job.

It was very good to meet him and at the same time sad for not being able to help him at that moment because he needed help, he did not have money to eat. His attitude was humble and when we talked to him about El Camino where we read the Bible and study, he seemed very interested and eager to know more about it.

Now he is coming to El Camino and we are teaching him, evangelizing and spending time with him. He is also attending church on Sundays. We have given him charity with food and buying some medicine because he has problems with his knees.

May God continue to use us to bless people who really need it.
