Building community

In our culture (of Ecuador), we enjoy making some type of typical regional food together. It’s a time to share moments in community and, in this case, it was through making humitas (a corn based food which is maybe slightly resembling a mix of a tamale and cornbread.).

Two years ago, the missionary team met the Segovia family—Ricardo, Fátima, and Doris—at El Camino (our Bible study center). They are believers and belong to a Christian church. They often attend Bible studies we have both at El Camino and at church.

They are kind and generous siblings and they share what God has blessed them with. They have a large piece of land near the city, where Ricardo and I planted some corn four months ago. It grew well, and we were able to harvest a lot. So, I invited Fátima, Ricardo and Doris along with the rest of the team to our house to prepare humitas and enjoy them together. It was a good time to cook, chat, and laugh. It was a great time to watch the children play and enjoy each other. It gives us joy and happiness to be able to teach and show our children what God's love looks like, what it's like to be in community when God is the center of our lives.
